wierd movie/game idea
« on: February 28, 2006, 05:09:10 am »
this is sort of a spin on history....i'm quite bored right now. it could easily be a game or movie if done right. anyway...

one thing i sort of take for granted is that the fundamental religions of earth came from some sort of outside influence - the pyramids, the greek gods, hell even genghis khan. so this planet just like earth grows up without all those things - pyramids, multiple religions, etc. science is triumphant, but like china they don't care about exploring outside their home. so they build up this very futuristic society, basically peaceful and all that but with a few outlying cultish cities. someone figures out a cryogenic chamber with a launcher/reentry system to sort of let people go in this planet's wake. the idea is that they'll stay in orbit along the same path, and eventually the planet will pick them up in a few years. they figure out the math and launch some of their most violent people in the belief that when they come back, they'll upset the peaceful planet being seen as a god of some kind. they get their math right for the whole thing and launch people periodically backwards along their orbit. the problem is that there's another planet on the exact same orbit on the exact opposite side of the sun - earth. these people land in different places and give us some of our more interesting religious tangents. from here the story can go several different ways. the most interesting i think would be for a similar cult to exist on earth to send someone back to this netherplanet. i don't even know if i'd want them to know about the planet's existance first. maybe they'd try an apocalyptic thing trying to come back to this planet. what if a satellite got accidentally knocked along this path? or a space station? if done right, this could be an epic mini-series.

Sounds good... I think...

You've missed something: the cryogenic chamber doo-hickey, is that developed by an evil scientist (since he wants to disrupt peace)?

Why would sending them into orbit of Htrae (Earth backword, (EDIT: This pun was not intentional and is a genuine typo. However, the author has had his knees removed, just in case) dontcha know) make the pods crash into Earth? Orbit stays locked into a planets gravity so wouldn't be affected by Earth...

How would Earth discover Htrae? Who would attack who? Would they even attack each other? What would this apocalyptic thing be?

Perhaps - make it so the humans of Earth want to go live on Htrae because it's so peaceful and safe but the Humans of Htrae don't want them so initially shun them into ghettos, then begin trying to kick them all out. Would be good for all the moral and political questions it could raise....

I think he meant, into the orbit of the sun. If you lay the pod on the orbital course of the planet, a year later the planet would 'bump' into it again. However, in this case, half a year later, along comes Earth.

This might not work of course because I'm not sure if effects of gravity would pull the pod out of the orbital course (either way, I dunno) because of it's slowed movement. Though, of course, being such a small object, it shouldn't be effected much, so ignore this.

Also, I don't understand the purpose of sending the most 'violent men' into cryostatus. To come back as a god figure? How does that work out? This doesn't make sense, and with that lack of clarity the whole story is flawed.

you've got the right idea Laser Akakori.

as to the whole "god figure" bit, i haven't totally decided. i'm thinking it might just be a ritual of "how badass can i be". maybe they even make order on warrior values like the Klingons in Star Trek. then when they wind up here they use their warrior traits or whatever to do all this crazy shit. i'm not even sure if i want them to be identically human or with some obviously distinguishable trait. there's reference in some religions to masks and figures like different animals. i'm wondering if that's the best they could describe weird facial hair or whatever.

Hmmmm....

Maybe dump the "god figure" idea and go for "They were a warring planet but world peace happened but some people kept wanting to fight so for ultimate punishment they were shot into space"

Maybe even to deliberately land on Earth?

It could be anything. When you see something your totally unaccustomed to, the brain makes up whatever it can muster. Like when the Spanish first landed on the shores of Aztec land, the Aztecs described them as humans with four legs and two heads using sticks that shot fire, when in reality it was Spaniards riding on horseback shooting their muskets. Unnecessary note, but I like that story.

Question: If this society is one without religion and is based upon peace and scientific achievement, then why would the status/strength of warrior types be so important?

i got another idea that could maybe fit into this scenario. what if an anarchist group sets off a bunch of nukes systematically along the equator, exactly at that timezones midnight (or whenever that part faces most exactly away from the sun). this would start the planet in a spiral towards the sun and everyone would just call it "global warming" until it was too late. i remember hearing that a lot more energy is released by a hurricane than a nuke, so i don't think that's actually the case now, but i'd be curious if any of those astronomers are measuring and remeasuring our distance from the sun over time. for the story, we could even have another faction set of a similar set of nukes during the day to counteract it.

maybe we could call this planet venus and have that be the explanation for the clouds and storms and crap. or maybe venus is really a paradise planet that has spies in the astronomy area telling everyone it's totally uninhabitable. we could have a lot of fun with this....
