internet restrictions
« on: February 26, 2006, 09:54:13 pm »
for you networking gurus, i have a conundrum. our school's network blocks most ports, specifically the ones used for gaming. i want to connect to at least one of my favorite games, and i believe if i can get to one i can get to any of them. i've tried different proxies and nothings worked. could it be that the proxies i have are just broken? note - each room is on a different subnet. i learned this when trying to get a lan game going. we can connect by entering the IP directly, but scanning for lan games is pretty hopeless.

My advice: Live with it.

You could look into HTTP tunnels but it's not worth it in most cases. But I guess it depends what kinda games you wanna play.. mudding's do-able.

part of the problem is i have this CS addiction. i used to play an hour or two a night on average. something like 5 on weekends. now i'm at 0 and it hurts. i will research HTTP tunnels though, is that kind of like VPN?

The tools I use: FreeProxy and SocksCap. Problem is, you need to have these running on an unblocked computer. As a thought you could try working with your games network settings or (if possible) get everyone to connect to an Online server.

If you can connect directly by specifiying then why can't you live with that? Surely you won't be able to play games indiscriminately (kick up, scan, game) so when you plan them with friends just tell them what to connect to.
tomorrow I will be here

Eeek. That's gotta hurt. What do they expect you to do to have fun? You can't learn if you aren't given the opportuniy to R&R. I'd complain to the head(s).

this looks beautiful from the description but unfortunately i can't download it here to try it out. do you have to have a registered domain to make it work? i'll start downloading/setting crap up in a couple weeks when i'm actually home.
