System Shock 2 had a great feeling throughout the entire game of total isolation and pure scaritude. FEAR is more about quick bursts of scariness, such as moving shadows and sudden sounds. Both are quite good though.

Nah. I'm starting to be bored with the "creepy little black-haired girl" syndrome that seems to plague horror movies today. It works because kids are supposed to be cute and innocent (though we all should know that they are quite the opposite - kids are often crueler and less considerate than grown ups), but as it's been done over and over ad nauseam, it is rapidly starting to lose its effect.

Also, these movies/etc seem to lack an important part of horror. They scare only to scare. There's a lot of style, and little substance. As with all good art, horror should make you think. It should upset you, make you reevaluate your reality.

My PC won't run the game, it seems. Well, it runs, but it's all black. There are some issues that is supposed to do this:

-Choosing a resolution that is supported by graphics card but not by monitor
-On an ATI Radeon card: FSAA and Pixel Doubling on at the same time

I have an ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 running on Omega drivers. It's not the resolution problem. And the other problem is a bit hard to adress, if it is the problem, because I can't seem to find a file to edit to turn them off (I'm betting they're turned on by default).

Anybody know anything that might help me?

Well...That was...intresting. It feels like The Ring mixed with Doom 3 with a dash of Max Payne. I'm not really impressed with it, I need more than just mindless killing and predictable "scary" moments. I need explosives.

played the demo yesterday.

i thought the atmsophere created was pretty good, and i can imagine the jump-factor being quite high if playing in a dark room wearing headphones. combat was quite fun and very tactical on the higher difficulty levels, it would get quite repetitive it if wasnt for the slow-mo which i think was implemented very effectively. my major complaint is the weapons, they all looked pretty hefty but sounded like a pee-shooter when you pulled the trigger and generally didnt feel like they had that much of a kick.

general impressions: final version looks like it'll be excellent on the first play-through but im not sure about how much replay value it'll have once the jump-out scare factor is no longer effective. it was also quite a bit of a system-whore, i played it on a mate's computer, and im fairly confident that it'll run like jack on my own pc.

I need explosives.

The multiplayer beta showed a cutscene with a very nice boom scene. Sexy physics engine + explosions =  ;D

I have an Athlon XP 3200+ and a GeForce FX 5200 and I play the demo in sweet sweet bliss.

Okay, I admit, I'm having an issue with the menu screens being garbled, but lowering the settings actually made the game run great and it still looks really really good (doom 3, half-life 2 quality, etc).

Now if I can just find out why Mount & Blade and FEAR demo have garbled text in the menu's..

Garbled menus are usually problems with video card drivers in my experience. Sometimes even going back a version or two helps if the newest drivers give you trouble.

Bork! Bork! Bork!

hmm. I might have to give this one a miss, unless its going to be able to stack upto system shock two or if it is not a sequel to system shock two I don't really want to play it. Also have a 2500, with radeon 9600 non pro I don't have high hopes it will run good.

Saying a game is as scary as doom3 isn't very good to go from, enter dark doom, turn off lights, moster(s) attack, repeat..... you get the jist. But a scary game like max payne is in a different league.

Also I need to finish System shock two one day
