A matter of faith..
« on: June 29, 2005, 07:37:27 pm »
Am I the only one who's lost faith in the gaming industry? Just like the movie industry they just try to bow down to the ignorant masses and produce un-original crap and endless sequels?

I used to be an avid gamer, but there days it's all a bit.. meh.. the last game I played and really enjoyed was Zelda: Wind Waker[1]. What happened? :/ The only game I'm planning to buy in the forseeable future is Myst V[1], which is the last in the series.. then what?

Edit: I'm also looking forward to Bioshock.. [2]

yep... it's all gone tits-up in the gaming industry... and it's because dickwads like EA have shitloads of money and are perfectly happy releasing yearly rehashes of games without adding the slightest improvements. the companies who actually dare to make truly innovative games just aren't getting the funding cause no-one wants to take any risks.

And yet many people just lap it up and pay out their £40 for EA's latest pile of crap. And they've been doing it for years, they bought the sports licensing agreements because they know, year in year out, they can make a fortune out of it. A prime example would be the Fifa games, ever since 1999 there have been no changes in gameplay, they make the graphics slightly prettier.

True dat.

There are some developers who are allowed to take on new concepts. The first to come to mind is Will Wrights Spore (gamespy preview article). While I'm not particularly drawn to the concept, I will have to give him credits for innovation. Also, I wouldn't be surprised to see a new, innovative game from Peter Molyneux and Lionhead. They've made a couple of them in the past, and that goes to show that while much of the gaming industry has gone "tits-up" (funny expression - I like it), there are some lights still.

Another game that I certainly want to have mentioned here is Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth, to be released this Fall. I'm having great expectations to that game.

Yeah theres no doubt that the games industry is flooded with terrible and unoriginal games but the games industry is also bigger now than it ever was. There are original fun games out there. My advice is, if your bored with the current games industry then get a DS.

I second that. DS > PSP by a long way.

Even better is the fact that Sony have figured out they're getting pwned on the handheld front so are deliberating whether or not to release porn UMD's for the PSP.  Talk about cheap tactics..

I'm not just pimping the DS here, theres a lot of other original shit out there too - Darwinia and Katamari spring to mind without me having to even give it any thought

DARWINIA HAS MY CHILDREN!

seriously, i sold my children to Darwinia for a copy, since i was broke.  tehy said something about "clarisse" and "liver" and "food", but all that was on my mind was the awesomeness of Darwinia.  damn, that game pwned

back on topic, yeah, teh gaming insudsrty has bombed.

back off topic, i must assert the unspoken king of RPG's... Baldurs Gate.

back on topic, yeah, if teh new games suck, go and play the old ones, lik e XenoGears, Legend of Dragoon, and Baldurs Gate.  not this new-age baldurs gate dark alliance crap, but teh old-school RPG god that was BG1 and BG2.  or xenogears, or Frogger, or hell, paly a nice game of pong.  its free, i tell you! free!

Nah, if we're going to play RPGs, let's play Fallout.

I agree so much. I spent 80 hours over 5 days playing Baldur's Gate 2 once.  The BG series (I also discount the console games, they are not worthy) are godlike. If not for the D&Dness then just for Misnc (and Boo) and Edwin. Those 3 are not only uber NPC's, they also spawn so much animosity it's brilliant.

Oh and David Warner does Irenicus perfectly.

Nah, if we're going to play RPGs, let's play Fallout.

Ahh, my back-up RPG :) The Fallout games are also quite brilliant. Try playing through with Jinxed and Bloody Mess...

Try playing through Gandhi mode. It's a lot more fun.

Speaking as one who's done it, no.

Although, "Gandhi mode" is somewhat misleading. The main tenet is you cannot cause direct damage to any creature. And yes, this means you cannot put dynamite in peoples' pockets :P

But, you can still beat the game.
