geez... this is some major off topic but i dont know anywhere else to turn so...

im looking for a program similar to microsoft word, the thing is that i dont want it to be made by microsoft :P (fills my computer with shit!!) I want it to be able to read word files though...

The OpenOffice.Org suite is very good. I use it instead of Microsoft Office. It has its own version of Word, which supports word documents [allows you to save in the .doc format]. OOo also has its own versions of Excel and Powerpoint which also support the Microsoft formats. It's available for Windows and Linux too, which is nice :)

Anyway, the whole thing is about 65mb, I think and 100% free.

i concur, Open Office is very nice, you can download but it takes a fairly long while (took me 4 and half hours) or try and get your hands on an Open CD, which contains OO and some other nice apps

Word 0wns! Just finished a 30 page uni paper without crashes... Can't say much about OpenOffice though, I've only seen screenshots so far.

office is just office....if you have a shitty pc then perhaps it will crash but come on it works for 99% of people
