A simply outstanding album.
« on: December 16, 2004, 06:28:20 am »
... is Deus Ex Machinae, but that's not what I came to talk about.

On Monday, I bought Ayreon: The Human Equation. I've listened to the double CD album 3 times since then, and I frankly can't remember the last time I was this moved my an album. It's probably been since I got my hands on Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake... and that was 7 years ago.

This album simply bleeds emotion... in fact, 7 different signers each personify an aspect of the human emotion and they've all nailed it right. The lyrics, they are real. They tell of the memories a man has as he lies in the coma with his wife and best friend at his side, and they manage to do so with honesty and without any cheesy-ness. Even the song Love is the opposite of cheesy, it's emotion wrapped up in a song.

And not only is the singing and mood right on par, but they are shaped though complex and well thought out. Yet they remain engraved in your mind, through the guitars, keyboards, and accoustic cellos and flutes.

It's just beautiful, recommended for all.

The Vortex Analysis:

The first time I went though it I had mixed feelings about the tracks. Just as I thought it was going to go into a bad-ass moment, it suddenly but back into a slower moment. I was kind of eehh for the whole album. But now Im going through it again and I've lightened up to it quite a bit.

I wouldn't recomend this album to people who just like hard stuff (like me 3/4 of the time). Overall it is VERY well done. I give this stuff 4 out of 5 vortex stars  :P

I downloaded it... I listened to the first 3 tracks and had mixed feelings, I've put it on my minidisc player and will listen to it properly next time I go on a long journey (which will be on Sunday since I'm going to Bulgaria for a week).

I thought THE was, albeit musically impressive and a damn good idea, emotionally dull. All emotions are spelled out through representative avatars that state their purpose and methods out loud. The best emotional albums, as far as I'm concerned, are more subtle than this. THE lacks subtlety.. and it lacks humanity. Every character  seems to be bland, almost as if they're from a storybook.. despite their emotions being stated out loud, there's nothing noble about them, seemingly.

The Perfect Element by Pain of Salvation is my cup of tea, really. It's only one CD and it's three or four years older than THE, but it seems to accomplish what THE didn't.

I have nothing against Ayreon--using James LaBrie and Devin Townsend like that was a great idea. I just don't think it worked emotionally.
